BACKGROUND

The cultural mosaic of Libya and its history of exchange between multiple ethnicities and cultures has resulted in a varied and rich musical heritage. To understand Libyan music better, the country can be divided into three regions. The east has been influenced by Middle Eastern, Greek, and Gulf cultures; the south by Sub-Saharan music culture; while the west carries on Western Mediterranean and Andalusian musical traditions 

Music, art, and performances overall witnessed a cultural boom yet the situation in the country has deteriorated since the civil war in 2014 in addition to the spread of extremism. Musicians face an extremely hostile environment for publicly performing music.

Struggles of Libyan Music

Music performance in Libya ( public performance) has been always more or less restricted, initially, the previous regime had restricted certain art forms from being performed but also didn’t encourage Art and music overall which didn’t align with its direction of governing. Post-2011 revolution, Music, art, and performances overall witnessed a cultural boom yet the situation in the country has deteriorated since the civil war in 2014 in addition to the spread of extremism. Musicians face an extremely hostile environment for publicly performing music.

STUDIO KHAYAL

Studio Khayal is an online show that brings unplugged music sessions to Libyan audiences, featuring talented artists from all over Libya. The show highlights original songs and cover performances, paired with engaging interviews that delve into Libya’s current art and music scene. Studio Khayal aims to showcase the diversity and richness of Libyan music by presenting artists from various regions, offering viewers an intimate look at their creative processes and musical journeys.

After four years after the release of its first season, Studio Khayal is excited to announce the launch of its second season. This new season not only explores different musical genres but also strongly emphasizes musical education and heritage preservation.

The second season of Studio Khayal expands into musical education, providing audiences with valuable insights into how to play instruments and understand basic Libyan rhythms and songs. By incorporating educational elements alongside entertainment, the show aims to enrich viewers’ appreciation of Libyan musical traditions and encourage the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage.
